AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) stocks slipped on Thursday after The Wall Street Journal reported that the cellphone carriers agreed to delay their planned rollout of a new 5G frequency band.Their planned 5G deployments will be delayed until 5 January to address concerns about potential interference with key cockpit safety systems.Verizon traded 2.1% lower, and AT&T fell 1.5 %, while broader U.S. stock indexes were mixed. The FAA, a unit of the U.S. Transportation Department had been planning to issue official mandates that would limit pilots’ use of certain automated cockpit systems to avoid potential interference from wireless towers on the ground transmitting new 5G signals.Interference between spectrum bands used by different end-users for their services has been a long-standing issue, especially between telecom service providers and airlines. These limits could disrupt passenger and cargo flights in 46 of the country’s largest metropolitan areas where towers are situated.Telecom industry officials disputed claims that the proposed cellular signals would represent any dangers, saying that available evidence doesn’t support the conclusion that the proposed 5G signals will interfere with flight equipment. IN ADDITION: Investors are scooping up shares of beaten-down telecommunication networks stocks, speculating that companies like AT&T and Verizon offer value despite muted prospects for revenue growth.AT&T shares are off nearly 13% in 2021 and near their lowest level in over a decade while Verizon Communications shares have fallen about 10%.Although a host of issues surround the telecommunications industry, senior vice president Stephen Massocca at Wedbush Securities said:“when you look at the valuation of the stocks relative to those issues, it seems to me that the market is way over-reacting,”Chief investment offer Bill Stone at Glenview Trust Company started buying AT&T shares early this year despite concerns as they were “frankly, too cheap.”AT&T posted higher quarterly revenue in its late October earnings report, while Verizon raised its annual earnings forecast. To invest in stocks, visit MEXEM today.
